Indigenous Peoples Day

Kizh tribe chairperson Andrew Teutimez Salas, accompanied by his father, Kizh chief Ernie Teutimez Salas, and other Kizh tribe members, blesses the Eagle staff in a ceremony Monday at Ganesha Park in Pomona to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. The staff is carried the length of North America, from Alaska to Panama, every four years by representatives of each indigenous nation along the way. The Eagle staff eventually meets the Condor staff, which is carried across South America. The event, known as the Peace and Dignity Walk, represents the healing of indigenous people and the continuance of traditional prayer.
